https://www.beverly-hanks.com/3764117 Mountain Masterpiece A Designer’s Exquisite Cabin in the Woods Debuts on the MLS In early 2000, Birmingham-based interior designer Betsy Brown was in Saluda, NC visiting her daughter when she happened upon a charming log cabin tucked away in the forest. She’d always wanted a little place in the woods as a mountain retreat, and this hand hewn log cabin captured her heart. She wrote the owner asking that she please be in touch if she ever considered selling. Three years later, the home came on the market and Betsy bought it, and the 12 surrounding acres, sight unseen. When she and her daughter, adventure entrepreneur Sara Bell, returned to the property for the first time, they discovered something that the MLS listing hadn’t featured, one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Green River Gorge that either had ever seen. They were dumbfounded. After the initial shock of such good fortune wore off, Betsy began the work that’s made her one of the most sought-after designers in the country. But instead of drawing upon the personal palette of her clients’ lives to create a portrait in which to live, this time the feeling of home was hers to envision and create. She immediately called on one of her best friends, renown architect Paul Bates, to help her design the quintessential mountain cabin. Every detail was considered, reconsidered, and refined until it was perfect. To execute the vision, Betsy tapped Geoff Rose and his team at Green River Builders, which specializes in high end residential and custom commercial construction. Over the next two years, the home was renovated and decorated to bring that vision into sharp focus. Walls of steel and glass maximized the stunning views and welcomed natural light in. Every surface was touched, “expanding on the authentic and deleting the superfluous,” as Betsy puts it. A collection of carefully curated furniture and decor began to fill every room with a delicate balance of form and function. Among them, a 14 foot custom-built dining table was placed at the center, which would soon gather family around for an unforgettable Christmas dinner. Now, more than 20 years after that first chance encounter with a little cabin in the woods, and a multitude of cherished experiences later, Betsy is ready to share one of her most personal creations with the world, or at least with one lucky buyer.
