[Arrangement] ลาวกระทบไม้ (Lao Kra-thob-mai) for String Quartet

This is my arrangement of one of the Thai traditional music, "ลาวกระทบไม้ (Lao Kra-thob-mai)," for String Quartet. Lao (ลาว) is not about Laos (ลาว), but is a name for the rhythm or specific style of Thai traditional music. There are other countries used similarly, like Phma (พม่า - Burma), Khaek (แขก), Khmer (เขมร - Cambodia), etc. Next, Kra-thob-mai derives from 2 words; "kra-thob" (กระทบ) means impact or hit (V.), and "mai" (ไม้) means wood (N.). So, kra-thob-mai means the pieces of wood hit together; in this sense, clapping together. It comes from the Thai traditional dance that is accompanied by the clapping of wood sticks. Please look over here to understand how the dance and music coming together with the claps of the wood sticks.    • รำกระทบไม้   Moreover, it is one of the tunes used to welcome freshmen to the university. Sometimes, there is a ceremony for that occasion. It also has lyrics. The summary of the lyrics is that the older years have welcomed freshmen and tied a white thread (called "สายสิญจน์" (Sai-sin) which is used in many ceremonies in Thailand), around their wrists as a symbol of blessing and good wishes. In my arrangement, I use only the tune and harmonize it in the Western music style, making the very different color and timbre from the Thai traditional style. The uses of Modes come in some points. So, it won't sound much like what you would hear in Thai traditional music. Hope you enjoy it.
