Carrauntoohil | Ireland's Highest Peak | Devil's Ladder & Zigzags | Drone footage from the peak!

The Devil's Ladder route is the most popular route up Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest mountain at 1,038m (3,407'), and that's the route we took. We returned via the zigzags for a total of 14.5 kilometers (9 miles). Based on what we read and watched online to prepare ourselves, we were ready for a rainy and cold trek. Instead we heard from every Irish person we spoke to that, after a summer of nearly constant rain, it was the nicest day in months! There were lots of hikers taking advantage of the beautiful day. 0:00 Carrauntoohil 2:48 The route 3:00 Portmagee 3:26 Killarney National Park 3:45 Rathcroghan 4:15 Beer The rocks in the Devil’s Ladder itself would be pretty slippery when they’re wet, and I think we would have turned back around and not gone up them if it had been rainy. But the weather was perfect, and up we went! The view at the peak is phenomenal and we stayed a long time since we'll probably not have the chance to be up there again. It’s amazing to me that the peak and much of the surrounding area is privately owned, and the trail is maintained by local volunteer groups. They do a super job of keeping the trail in good condition which can’t be easy with all the rain Ireland has. On the flat path back to Cronins Yard is when Joe decided to spice things up by tripping on a rock and giving himself a bloody nose. His first aid kit saved the day, and we eventually continued on our way. It was an unforgettable hike, and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a challenging hike in Ireland! That said, it's strenuous, and if the weather is bad it would be very easy to lose the trail and get lost or hurt. Use good judgment and don't put yourself or the rescue squad in danger by being unprepared. County Kerry Ireland drone footage drone shots
