Difference between Risk Assessment and Job Hazard Analysis.

My name is Waliu Adegoke and on this episode of Safety moment with walieyullah, we shall be elaborating, in simple terms, what makes a risk assessment document different from Job Hazard Analysis document Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Risk Assessment (RA) are both important tools used in occupational health and safety management to identify and mitigate potential hazards and risk in the workplace. While there is some overlap, in their purpose and methodology, there are some key differences between the two. Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) is a systematic process of identifying and evaluating potential hazards associated with a specific job or task. It involves breaking down a job or task into smaller steps, identifying the hazards associated with each step, and developing controls to mitigate those hazards. JHA is typically conducted by the workers who perform the job or task, with the assistance of a safety professional if needed. Risk Assessment (RA), on the other hand, is a broader process that involves identifying and evaluating potential hazards throughout the workplace or organization. It is a systematic approach to identifying and analyzing potential risks, assessing the likelihood and potential consequences of those risks, and developing controls to mitigate or manage those risks. RA is typically conducted by a team of safety professionals, with input from workers, managers, and other stakeholders. One key difference between JHA and RA is their scope. JHA is focused on a specific job or task, while RA is focused on the entire workplace or organization. Another difference is the level of detail involved. JHA involves a detailed analysis of each step of a job or task, while RA involves a broader analysis of potential hazards and risks that may not be specific to any one job or task. Also, Risk Assessment is carried out before the start of a project to have an overview of the potential risk and hazards to the project and to serve as a guide to project pre-planning with regards to health and safety, and forms part of the documents required to start a project. Job Hazard Analysis is being implemented upon commencement of the project. It looks closely, specifically into various tasks to be carried out during the execution phase of the project and most times is being used alongside the permit to work. Workers who are to carryout each task will have their names written and signed of the JHA as evidence of communication of the risk and hazard and their commitment to complying with the corrected measures which have been provided . This tells us that, while JHA is worker focused, the risk assessment does more of providing evidence of identifying various hazards and risks associated to the project and the overall control measures that will be established upon commencement of the project. Overall, both JHA and RA are important tools in occupational health and safety management. JHA is useful for identifying and mitigating hazards associated with specific jobs or tasks, while RA is useful for identifying and managing risks throughout the workplace, organization or project.
