Most Mario games sell well, but one that sold particularly well was Super Mario Land. As one of the first games for the original Game Boy, it was a showpiece for what Nintendo's new handheld could do. It was also a little bit... kooky! Super Mario Land was an excellent example, with changes made to the visuals and gameplay that specifically made it more suitable for the new platform. It released in 1989 in both Japan and North America but, despite sharing a similar launch window, was received in different contexts in each region - Japan was already playing Super Mario Bros. 3, whereas American players had most recently received their unique version of Super Mario Bros. 2. This meant that the simplicity of the Game Boy release was less striking for players in North America. Nevertheless, the game was hugely successful - both as a stand-alone entry in the franchise, as well as proof that the Game Boy library would contain games of comparable complexity to those on the home consoles of the era. The soundtrack to this video is mostly comprised of tracks from 'Super Mario Compact Disco' by the Ambassadors of Funk.
