GSP Crime Suppression Unit Teams Up With APD Aviation to Stop Illegal Street Racing Event

On Saturday, October 16, 2021, at approximately 2217 hours, we received information in regards to an illegal street racing event located at 2022 Headland Drive in East Point, GA. Uponour arrival, | observed a white and green Chevrolet Camaro doing doughnuts in the parking lot. I activated all my emergency equipment and the driver initiated a pursuit. The occupant drove straight into the path of another trooper and I bumped the rear of his car to redirect his path. The driver continued to accelerate, before entering the sidewalk under the canopy and striking several businesses. The driver then moved back into the parking Iot and continued to flee. The driver had the throttle wide open and the back tires were still spinning in his attempt to escape. The driver eventually lost the right front wheel and steering. l decided to perform a PIT maneuver to force the driver from other traffic, ending the pursuit. I exited my vehicle, weapon drawn. and ordered the driver to raise his hands. Cpl Ennis removed the driver from the driver's seat and placed him into handcuffs behind his back. The driver showed complete disregard for the safety of himself or the many others that were on scene at the time. The driver was identified as Carlos Merritt Jr. He was arrested for Racing, Reckless Driving, Failure to Maintain Lane, and Fleeing and Attempting to Elude. The driver was taken to the East Point Jail for housing until transported to Fulton County Jail. No further action was taken.
