2023 EU Enlargement package: Fit for the new geopolitical era?

13 November 2023 - In-person Policy Dialogue Speakers: Gert Jan Koopman, Director-General, DG NEAR, European Commission; Štefan Füle, Former European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy and Chair of the EPC’s Task Force on EU Enlargement Moderator: Teona Lavrelashvili, Policy Analyst and Coordinator of the EPC’s Task Force on EU Enlargement, European Policy Centre This in-person Policy Dialogue marked the official launch of the EPC’s Task Force on EU enlargement. During the event, Gert Jan Koopman, Director-General of DG NEAR, presented the 2023 Enlargement Package, including the country reports. The war in Ukraine highlighted the strategic significance of EU enlargement as a strategic policy priority for the Union’s security interests in the new geopolitical context. Yet, delivering on the enlargement dossier, which now also includes three Eastern European countries in addition to the Balkans and Türkiye, remains a challenge for the Union and aspirants. The 2023 Enlargement Package assessed the efforts of the EU-hopeful countries in complying with the membership criteria and called attention to the reform priorities that the aspirants need to tackle if they are to advance towards accession.
