McConkie Arrangement: Mack Wilberg In a worldwide conference held in April 1972, Bruce R. McConkie—an ecclesiastical leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—read a poem that captured in verse his personal witness of the divinity of Jesus Christ. As the new edition of the Latter-day Saint hymnal was being prepared for publication in 1985, Tabernacle organist John Longhurst was invited to set this moving testimonial to music, creating the hymn “I Believe in Christ.” McConkie died just before the Hymns were published, but his forceful words continue to convey the feelings of the faithful from every era. Mack Wilberg wrote his arrangement of “I Believe in Christ” for The Tabernacle Choir in 2001. (Lyrics) I believe in Christ, He is my King! With all my heart to Him I’ll sing; I’ll raise my voice in praise and joy, Om grand amens my tongue employ; I believe in Christ, He is God’s Son. On earth to swell His soul did come. He healed the sick; the dead He raised. Good works were His; His name be praised. I believe in Christ, my Lord, my God! My feet He plants on gospel sod.
