British Columbia Aviation Museum Hollywood Commandos Strike At Dawn

The 2nd World War spawned a number of war-themed movies. The Patricia Bay Air Station, which became the Victoria International Airport, figured prominently in 2 of them: Commandos Strike at Dawn (1942) and Son of Lassie (1945). This video is about Commandos Strike at Dawn. In the summer of 1942, Hollywood came to Vancouver Island to film the movie, Commandos Strike at Dawn. Filming Dates: July 20, 1942 – Sept. 25, 1942 Locations: • Heals Rifle Range on Wallace Drive: German Base • Saanich Inlet: a Norwegian fjord, with a Norwegian Base. • Halls Boathouse – now Goldstream Marina: a Norwegian fishing village • Patricia Bay Air Force Station: Allied Field • Willows Fairground buildings in Oak Bay: Studios for interior shots The RCAF provided 2 Bristol Bolingbrokes and 2 Westland Lysanders. The Lysanders were disguised as German aircraft. The movie received an Oscar nomination for its musical score. On the Saanich Inlet is a mysterious stone staircase. Some say it was constructed for the movie, although it does not appear in it. Others say the staircase preceded the movie. Director: John Farrow Writers: Irwin Shaw (Screen Play) C.S.
