Heiðrun is mentioned in the Poetic Edda, a collection of Old Norse poems. In the poem Grímnismál, Heiðrun is described as a goat that stands on top of Valhalla and consumes the leaves of the world tree Yggdrasil. The poem refers to Heiðrun as a creature that provides mead to the einherjar, the chosen warriors who reside in Odin's hall, Valhalla. The concept of a goat providing sustenance or serving a symbolic purpose is also associated with another creature in Norse mythology named Eikþyrnir. Eikþyrnir is a stag that stands on top of Valhalla, and from its antlers, rivers of mead flow to nourish the warriors.
