Natural Light: Transforming a School on East Eight Mile

How can a struggling charter school find the funding to improve their campus, without any grants, fundraising, government assistance, or foundation support? When a new leader arrives at a charter school in Detroit, he immediately envisions a better environment for his students. But with no outside funding to make changes, he enlists the help of a small firm that specializes in challenging school development projects. ~~~ The Academy of Warren (AOW), a K-8 charter school, represented what can happen when schools rely too heavily on revenue motives, enrollment counts, and narrow standardized test scores. This is especially true in lower-income or marginalized communities, as the one served by AOW. The result is “warehousing” of children to maximize revenues while minimizing expenses, with too little consideration of their education or human development. Fit the maximum number of children into windowless rooms along the narrowest possible corridors, and exclude any “extras” - no library, no arts, no science labs, no gym, no music, no playgrounds, no athletic fields (or landscaping of any kind), and even no natural light anywhere in the building. But genuine student-centered education involves so much more. Children spend many of their most formative years in school, and the social & educational environment that they're provided with has a significant effect on their development. The project in this documentary is about creating a genuine student-centered environment; providing a rich array of learning spaces, encouraging curiosity and exploration, and developing critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills. It’s about affirming that all students deserve an engaging, healthy, and stimulating school environment - no matter where they grow up. And ensuring that every person who enters the school – students, families, staff – knows they are welcomed, valued, and respected for who they are. ~~~ Short version here (8 mins):    • Natural Light: Transforming a School ...   www.equityschools.org 0:00 Intro 2:15 Goals 3:25 Three Part Plan 6:30 Budget Crisis 7:51 New Crisis 8:39 Building the Playground 10:05 Construction Begins 10:29 Results 14:11 Final Words
