Super Constellation landing at downtown Kansas City Airport (MKC).

Sometimes when the Save-A-Connie Super "G" Constellation, "Star of America," would be returning from an airshow to its home base at Kansas City Downtown Airport, the flight crew would request a "gear down flyby check" from the airport tower. I experienced this "gear check" on August 25, 1991, while I was recording the landing with my VHS video camera. Essentially, the "gear check" was a request to "buzz the field" with the Connie. The individual's name on this Connie flight who on occasion would direct my attention to things I may want to video escapes my memory (he also opened a left side door, once on the ground, near the cockpit to help cool off the cabin interior and permit a chance to video tape an unobstructed, clear shot of the props turning while in the plane). This is the case with most of the other members of SAC who are shown in this video. Sorry, but this was over 20 years ago. By the way, we were returning from an airshow at Glenview Naval Air Station, Glenview, IL (a northwest suburb of Chicago). The trip back to K.C. through the hot, humid, August air took around two hours. This was my first of three trips I took aboard the Save-A-Connie (now Airline History Museum) Super Constellation. I owe Paul Pristo (the individual who bought this aircraft at an auction in Mesa, AZ and subsequently donated it to Save-A-Connie) and all members of Save-A-Connie, past and present, a big thank you for these flights I took on my favorite aircraft. This was only possible due to a dedicated group of Constellation enthusiasts initially fixing up an otherwise derelict Super Connie at Mesa to operational status and then flying it to Kansas City, MO. Once the Connie arrived back at K.C., the real work began in terms of replacing worn engines, locating a Constellation passenger interior (this aircraft had been a freighter for most of its life) and even replacing items like main wing attachment bolts to fulfill FAA requirements- just to name a few major items of restoration. A good portion of this work was performed by former TWA employees who worked on that airlines Lockheed Constellations back in the day. Many, age wise, were in their 60's, 70's and 80's.
