Rubber Bands (Elastics) for Braces - Braces Guide

In this video I discuss what rubber bands, or Elastics for braces are used for and how they work. Rubber bands, or elastics, come in all different sizes and thickness, this affects the amount of force applied to the teeth to change and improve the bite. Common types of rubber bands for braces are Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 elastics. The rubber band type is based on the type of bite the orthodontist is trying to correct. Vertical elastics are another type of elastic that can be used to bring upper and lower teeth together. I also discuss how the length of time wearing the rubber bands is very important. It is critical to follow the instructions of the orthodontist very closely since they know the specific situation very well and can guide the patient to help improve their smile and bite. Sometimes they need to be worn all day and night and sometimes just at night – this is best determined by the orthodontist and they will give the exact instructions. In the video I go over how the elastics can be placed simply using the fingers. I also show how an elastics placement tool can be used to help attach the rubber band, which can make it easier and more hygienic.
