How Do Braces Move Teeth? - Braces Guide

In this video, I explain how braces move teeth. Moving teeth is an amazing and complicated process that involves engineering (metals, alloys, brackets, wires), physics (forces, moments, couples, friction), chemistry (bonding materials, adhesives), and biology (cellular process that results in bone remodeling and tissue reorganization). The braces have different components that allow the wires to be placed, which then transmits different types of forces to align and correct the crowded teeth. I explain the different parts of the brackets, and show how the wires fit into the slot, and how colored elastic ties are used to hold the wire into the bracket. I also explain differences in wires and how flexible wires are used at the beginning of treatment to start the alignment process, and then larger, less flexible, and adjustable wires are used to finish the alignment later on in treatment. I then diagram a simplified explanation of the specific forces that are applied to braces and how those forces can move teeth in all directions – up/down, angulation, tipping, rotations, and torque.
