Phonemic awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate the individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. CVC words are words that contain three letters and follow a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern, such as "dog" or "cat." To spell CVC words through phonemic awareness, a person would first identify the individual sounds in the word, then match those sounds to the appropriate letters. For example, to spell the word "dog," a person would first identify the sounds /d/ /o/ /g/, and then match those sounds to the letters d, o, and g. This process can be taught through a variety of activities and exercises, such as blending sounds to form words and segmenting words into their individual sounds.
