Is The Figure Of Nine Knot Actually Easier To Untie?

A Figure of Eight knot is easier to untie than a Figure of Nine knot. I have been proving this since the early 2000's and as of late online more often. And still, for some reason people still claim the opposite. Even the poll I recently posted had 32% of the people saying the F9 would be easier to untie. The Figure of eight knot is one of the best allround climbing knots for many reasons and it always easier to untie than a figure of nine knot. I have done these little tests often and NEVER has a Figure of Nine knot been easier to untie. NEVER! So, if you claim that a F9 is easier, show me the result of your test. Tie a F8 and F9 on each end and pull them apart. Or do several ropes with the knots. Bounce around, load it on various tensions and untie them a few times. Make a video post or send it to me. If you need ideas on how to test this on the cheap, email me at [email protected]. or send me a DM on instagram/tiktok/Patreon/Facebook. I am easy to find. I am not interested in the comment “I have used it for years and my F9 always come out” or “I was taught by a real OG scottish rope tech who has done it for 30 years”. That is what I usually hear and no one can back up those claims. Just the I have always done it comment. If you think that an F9 is easier to untie, prove it. I have yet to receive proof as what I show. And you know why? Because the people who have done these test all change their stance. And it seems that most of this “knowledge” is hand me down beliefs without anything to back it up. For instance, I know of a fire station that has changed their procedures after having seen my video on youtube about this subject called: “F8 VS F9 Which is easier to untie?”    • F8 VS F9  Which is easier to untie? -...   and the performing tests. Also, a F8 is easier to tie and dress properly and it is easier to recognise as well. Those two factors are more important than "untieability" or strength of a knot. Strength of the knot is the next argument. “But the F9 is stronger”... By how much?? From what I know we are talking a few % in a lab setting. If those few % would be the difference between life and death you are already making huge errors in your rigging. Out in the field with old and dirty ropes we take 50% of MBS for a knot in the rope and take a SF of 10. If you go over, you need to adjust your rigging and maybe resort to tensionless hitches for instance. Strength is rarely the most important factor in choosing a knot. Now I have been saying and proving this for a LONG time. If you have not seen the previous video, have a look. I still have a piece of rope somewhere with an F9 in there. That said, I am happy to be proven wrong.
