(10 Jul 1996) Hindi/Nat Nineteen journalists were kidnapped and later released some hours later by separatists in Kashmir in India on Monday. Among the victims was an APTV cameraman who filmed his kidnappers. These Kashmiri rebels hijacked a busload of journalists heading to a news conference Monday and threatened to kill five of them if their papers did not apologize for defying an order to cease publication. These pictures were taken by a cameraman from Associated Press television, who was among the hostages. The incident took place in Srinagar, where guerrillas are waging a war to make Kashmir independent. The Al-Ikhwan Jammu-Kashir group hijacked the bus, apparently irked that some of their news releases were not being published by local dailies. After 10 hours, the hijakers gave up and released their captives. SOUNDBITE (Hindi) " These militants who call themselves Ikhwan, they have treated you badly. Last July, the Al-Faran militant group kidnapped 6 Western hostages, one of whom, has been beheaded, while a second escaped. But there's been no word on the whereabouts of the other four now for some weeks. The Indian government believes the four , an American, two Britons and a German are alive, though it has offered no evidence to back that claim.
