RFF Live | Unpacking Order 1920, FERC’s New Regional Transmission Planning Rule

RFF Live | Transforming Transmission: Unpacking Order 1920, FERC’s New Regional Transmission Planning Rule As the US continues to decarbonize, the grid will face dual challenges of rapidly increasing demand from electrification and unprecedented expansion of clean energy generation. To accommodate this transformation, the US will need to expand and update its transmission system, but building new lines takes time and coordination, and traditional planning processes have not kept up with grid needs. On May 13, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) unveiled Order 1920, the Grid Expansion Rule, aimed at improving these transmission planning processes. On May 23, Resources for the Future (RFF) hosted “Transforming Transmission: Unpacking Order 1920, FERC's New Regional Transmission Planning Rule.” At this virtual event, we will hear a broad overview of the new rule from Jignasa Gadani, Director of the Office of Energy Policy and Innovation at FERC, followed by analysis from a panel of experts about what’s in the new rule and its implications for the transmission system and grid decarbonization. Host: - Karen Palmer, Resources for the Future Keynote Speaker: - Jignasa Gadani, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Panelists: - Terri Eaton, Xcel Energy - Rob Gramlich, Grid Strategies - Karen Onaran, Electricity Consumers Resource Council - Jon Schneider, Stinson LLP - Sue Tierney, Resources for the Future (Moderator)
