Types Of Foundation part 2 RAFT FOUNDATION

Raft Foundation or Matt foundation is a type of shallow foundation. There are six different types of raft foundations being constructed. 1) Flat Plat Type , This type of Raft Slab is provided when the columns are close and the load or the bearing capacity of the soil is less, the column footing overlaps then instead of giving individual footing a combined footing is given. A common footing is given and this type is call as flat plate raft foundation. The thickness of such type is about 300 to 400 mm. Steel to the raft slab is provided at the bottom as well as on the top on both the directions. 2) Flat plate thickened under column. When the load of the structure increases the loads on the column increases to counter this load the columns are thickened at the base . 3) Flat plate with pedastal , this type of raft foundation is given when the loads are increased and either the columns are strengthened at bottom or at the base the pedastal is given which gives stability to the structure. 4) Two Way beams and slab. When the loads on the column is variable these type of raft foundation is given. Beams are provided across the columns in both the directions. 5) Cellular Construction. These type of raft slab is given when the loads are too heavy and the chances of subsoil water is high. A cellular type construction is done. There is a slab at bottom and top of the beams . This creates hollow cells in between. This give stability to the raft foundation. 6) Basement walls as Rigid frame. When the loads of the structure is is too heavy or the soil has very less bearing capacity or is expansive type then these type of raft foundation are provided. The Loads are so heavy that the depth of the beams increases. These beams are are used as the walls of the basement and is used for store or parking purpose.
