https://www.buymeacoffee.com/TJH3113 Our thoughts and best wishes are with all our Family, Friends (and everyone in between) who are dealing with the hurricane situation in Florida - those who left and those who remained. I know this probably isn’t the best bass for the job, but I thought it would be interesting to play the Ric on this type of song. “Josie” by Steely Dan off of their “Aja” album which came out in 1977 and, once again, features the Great Chuck Rainey on bass, as well as a guitar solo by the late Walter Becker. I had such a great time learning “Peg” a few weeks ago, that I started learning another Steely Dan song as soon as I posted it. Steely Dan was one of those bands whose music I loved, but didn’t have a real desire to learn. Part of the reason might have been that a lot of the bass lines are pretty improvisational in nature which makes them a bit more difficult to learn and commit to memory. Mercifully, this line is fairly straightforward. The bass-lines on Donald Fagen’s “Nightfly” album (which could pass for a Dan album IMO) are a bit more mapped out and linear and I’ve done a number of covers from that record. So, this is the debut of the Rickenbacker 4003S that I had converted into a 4000. I’ve always had a sort of love/hate thing with Rickenbackers and decided to give it one last chance, for better or worse, till death do us part and all that business. I prefer the sound of just the bridge p/u and I could have just left it as a 4003 and not used the neck p/u, but I don’t like having things or features that I am not going to use. Also, I find that, these days, I prefer the simplicity and focus of single pick-up instruments. The funny thing is, my decision to remove the neck p/u probably has some roots from my experience with a soundman/band member many years ago. Our drummer used to mix our live sound and we had quite a large, full PA system…double 18” “W” bins, 2 Perkins, and a horn per side. I always preferred my sound to be the way you hear it on most of my videos - not very “bassy”, clean & clear, with some top-end sizzle. His idea of a “good” bass sound was completely different, let’s just leave it at that. Anyway, every soundcheck, he’d ask if I had my volume(s) all the way up (it wasn’t beneath me to keep a little boost in my pocket in case I needed it later in the set…haha) and both p/u’s on. I’d say, “But of course I do.” and then he’d march from the mixing booth up to the stage, check my volumes and actually throw the toggle switch to the middle which would, IMO, turn my tone to mush…and even that was too much “tone“ for him. Of course, as soon as he turned his back to walk back to the mixing board, I’d switch it back to the bridge p/u and it went on like that for years and years. I guess that’s always been in the back of my mind, so now, no one will ever again be able to play with the p/u selector on my Rickenbacker. How do you like them apples? When I had the work done to the bass (neck pick-up removed, pick-guard replaced, fret leveling…yeah, a fret leveling on a brand new bass) I had the stock p/u replaced with a fairly expensive, small company, replacement and I really think I prefer the sound of the original p/u. If you feel like going back to the videos I did with the stock p/u (Long Train Runnin’ and September) to do a comparison, let me know what you think. This is the main reason I try not to step on the slippery slope of pick-up replacement. I think the stock p/u had a bit more “life” to it or the replacement sounds a bit “flatter”, if that’s the right term. Anyway, I’m not going to rush into changing anything back just yet. Of course, I have a brilliantly designed Zero-Mod Thumb-rest installed on the bass as well.
