Omer Plays Bass . . . Randy Newman - I Love L.A. (bass cover)

Omer Plays Bass . . . Randy Newman - I Love L.A. (bass cover) Bass by Nathan East Bass Used in this Video: Dingwall Guitars Combustion 5 Hope you have a look and if you do, don’t forget to click 'Like" and subscribe to the channel In the period of 1982 – 1984, the guys in Toto, well they were everywhere – “Toto IV” was top of the charts, “Thriller” was out, every second song on the radio had one or more of the Toto guys on it. In fact, in the 1983 Grammy’s, where Toto took away multiples of awards, one or another of the guys played on between 40 and 50 of the nominated songs and albums. Quite a feat that you won’t see today or probably ever again. The studio scene in L.A. in the ‘70s and ‘80s (and the same in NY with a different set of guys and with a different vibe) must have been something with many of my favorite players on all instruments running around from studio to studio playing on 2, 3, 4 sessions a day and creating the catalogue that has played a huge role in shaping my musical tastes and me as a musician and bass player. On bass you had Leland Sklar, Bob Glaub, David Hungate, Mike Porcaro, Nathan East, Abe Laboriel, Louis Johnson, Chuck Rainey – these are the guys that I listen to, learned from over the years and dreamed I could be (spoiler – never got there) and there are lots of their parts on OPB. This track, ‘I Love L.A.’ from Randy Newman on his 1983 “Trouble in Paradise” album might as well have been a Toto song with Lukather, Paich, Jeff Porcaro and future Toto member Nathan East on the track – as well as Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac. Most know Randy as the Pixar theme guy, but he was an interesting writer, singer and piano player with an odd voice, sharp wit and an unlikely almost EGOT (missing a Tony) writing a pile of hits like ‘Mama Told Me’, ‘You Can Leave Your Hat On’, ‘Short People’ and more, this is the song that became the L.A. Lakers theme song (and with it a payday for the musicians every time it got played at the arena with a win and in the ’80s and ‘90s the Lakers won a lot). A very well written, sardonic lyric, the track pays musical tribute to a number of styles and grooves with a bunch of great players that just sound like they are having a fun time playing together - the middle screams Paich with the Italian orchestration and Lukather lays down a great solo over some odd changes and that iconic gang vocal on “We Love It”. Nathan was breaking into the L.A. session scene at this time and boy would he break in with a bunch of great tracks over the coming years with huge hits with Kenny Loggins (and that amazing ‘Footloose’ bass track), Phil Collins (co-writing ‘Easy Lover’) Eric Clapton, Whitney Houston and well pretty much every huge artist in music over the past 40+ years. Lots of fun to play this part and a few challenging and interesting bits like the long decay on the single notes on the intro and cool slides up the neck - the bass part from Nathan doubles the synth part from Paich - I think the synth bass was supposed to be the bass part but just didn’t have the groove needed and Nathan’s part just brings the whole track to life along with Porcaro. I’ve only been to L.A. once but I sure can say that I love this track. Disclaimer: I am not saying this is exactly how Nathan East played this song, but it is how I would play it if I was playing it at a gig.
