Anton Talarico | Definitive Analysis | Alice Munro's "To Reach Japan"

"To Reach Japan" is an epic tale set in 1970's metropolitan Canada, and explores Greta's conflict between being a devoted housewife versus being a successful poet, a writer who challenges the status quo based on the simple merit of her profession. It is quite astonishing to think of the incredible journey Greta will take - through her psyche - and also via train - to Toronto - with a desire to reach Japan - and have her desires fulfilled. But what does this mean for her family? What does this mean for her husband and daughter, Katy? Can a poet be a person who gives and gives, or only an individual who takes and takes? It is really a universal question that irks at us all: are we content with being somewhat (or completely) unsatisfied with our lives? Or does it drive us "wild"? I am blown away by this text, and the detailed and unique images have always stuck in my mind reminding me of the deep symbolic meaning that they bring across - and I would imagine that is the testament to any writer engaged in the task of creative writing. Munro simply hits it out the ball park with this short story. It's quite a feat, in my personal opinion.
