When to Use an Inlet Box with your Centrifugal Fan

Find out how to use an inlet box to create a better pathway when you have limited space. We recommend a straight pathway of about 5-8 times the diameter of your inlet duct, but if you don’t have that much space to work with, you will need to find a next-best way to get the air to the fan. An inlet box allows for a 90-degree turn close to the fan to pull the air from any direction. In this 1½ minute video, Senior Application Engineer Chet White explains the basics of what to look for and how it works. Read Full Transcript: This is Chet. We're talking about inlet boxes. So what is an inlet box? I always say this is the best way to do a bad thing. So, fan manufacturers always want you to give us a long, straight drive into the fan. So we want you to have somewhere between five - eight times the duct diameter of the inlet of straight duct into a fan - that's the optimum performance. Frequently, in your application, that's not feasible. So if you have to make a 90-degree turn right in front of your fan, this is the best way to do it. So we put an inlet box right here that connects to the inlet of the fan and turns it immediately upward, so that you have a downward um you have a downward travel of your air into the fan. You can rotate this wherever you want, if your air is coming in from the side, coming in from kind of from an angle here, so what the inlet box does, this one has a diverter in the middle of it. This one has a diverter in the middle of it. It's going to actually take your air down, split it so that half of your air comes in from the top half of your inlet and half comes in on the bottom of your inlet. Is it ideal? No. But it's the best way to do a 90-degree turn right in front of your fan.
