What, if anything, is the medial temporal lobe?

This is the provocative question posed here by neuroscientist Elisabeth Murray. To address it, she walks us through the history of failures, then qualified successes, then subsequent (and ongoing) revisions, of attempts to develop a definitive model in the monkey of human medial temporal-lobe amnesia (à la patient H.M.).
