We know that we see objects in the environment by virtue of the workings of the visual system. How do we hold these visual representations “in mind” when we can no longer see them, yet we need them to guide our behavior? Here, cognitive neuroscientist John Serences describes his influential experiment that tested one possibility: the sensory recruitment hypothesis.
