[作画 MAD/AMV] Norifumi Kugai (久貝典史) Sakuga

Norifumi Kugai started his career as an animator at Xebec, mainly making in-betweens. He worked for other companies, highlighting Madhouse, since it was in High School of the Dead that Kugai debuted as a Key Animator. In 2011 he works for the first time with Madhouse Exclusive Animation Producer Yuuichirou Fukushi on the X-Men series. He also worked with Bones on a few projects but it was with his participation in Space Dandy that he began to become recognized for his abilities. While Space Dandy was still in production, Bandai Visual approached Madhouse with an adaptation of One Punch Man, so Fukushi recruited Shingo Natsume to direct and many animators, including Norifumi Kugai, who served as one of the four main action animators (Fukushi also recruited Yoshimichi Kameda, Gousei Oda and Se-Jun Kim, dubbed the "Four Heavenly Kings"). It had been planned that the Four Heavenly Kings would work together for the action of each episode, but it was decided to divide them into different episodes (only in #01 did all four work). It's mentioned that Kugai didn't come home for two or three weeks during production, he would sleep in the corner of the studio, get up and immediately do an Original Drawing. OPM kicked off the various collaborations between Fukushi, Shingo, and Kugai, serving as character designer for ACCA and Sonny Boy, as well as supervisor and animator. Despite being a traditional animator, Kugai adopted a style closer to that of web animators. In his animation, he usually maintains the character model quite well, no matter how complex they are, with the particularity that his strokes are quite irregular. Remarkable both with action animation and character acting. He uses irregular timing that can make his sequences look choppy, but with movement in favor of expressiveness. He wields a great sense of depth both in movement and in the very sophisticated shading he employs (probably due to OPM), as well as managing to convey the feeling of weight and strength. He usually uses smears in which he completely eliminates the outline of the drawings, leaving only the color as literally a "smear" that little by little recovers its shape and outline. Implement a 3-layer lighting, highlighting the lighting of the third layer adopting irregular and curious shapes, similar to drops of water with opaque tones. When he draws the clothes, he usually makes the "wrinkled" parts very noticeable, making it stand out visually. His animation of fire, smoke and liquid is most of the time very similar to that of web animators, having little three-dimensionality but being quite dynamic with its irregular timing. Kugai appears to be a freelancer, but is still an active contributor to Fukushi and Shingo's Madhouse productions. Sakuga (作画) literally means drawing. It is not something specific like "super spectacular animation", but the term is used to define a well animated sequence and that's it, good animation. Animation is fundamentally movement, so a sequence with good movement is already good animation, the effects and uses of cinematography are only added to the base.
