Ten Boards and Beads Presentation Montessori Primary Mathematic

This video is made for students to watch in order to work with the montessori ten board material. Material: Ten Boards and Beads In this video I use the materials from Nienhuis Montessori | The Original Montessori www.nienhuis.com First Presentation: Introducing the numbers 10 - 90 Invite a child Introduce the activity and the material Have the child set up the floor mat Have the child bring the boxes: the ten board and the small box with tens and units beads one at the time Place the ten board box on the top left of the mat. Place the beads box below the ten board box. Set up the ten boards as in previous presentation (from 10-90) and leave the card inside the box, tell the child that we will work with the cards later. Close the box. Take out all the ten beads bar on the mat, organize them vertically close to each other on the left of the ten board ,close the box. Point to the ten on the board. Ask the child: what is this? Take one ten bar beads and place it on the left side of the board. Point to 20 and ask: What do we have here? The child response: two tens. If the child say: twenty, it means that the presentation is too late. We can review the numbers with this presentation more quickly. Bring down the first ten bar and take one more bar and place it next to the first bar. Say : twenty Say: 2 tens is twenty Repeat the same action until you reach to 90 When done Invite the child to read all the numbers 10 to 90 and 90 to 10 Invite the child create the numbers with the beads next to the board. Invite the child to continue work on his own. If successful, you may continue to the next presentation Note: When saying the number, emphasize the word ty which also means ten. Second Presentation: Introducing the numbers 11 - 99 Invite a child Introduce the material and the activity Have the child set up a floor mat Have the child bring the boxes one at the time to the mat. Take out all tens and the units from the beads’ box Organize the beads below the box: the ten bars vertically and align the units beads vertically next to the ten bars. Take one ten bar and place it next to the ten board. Take one unit bead and place it next to the ten bar. Say: eleven Create 11 on the board and say eleven Remove the number one card on the side facing up Put one more unit bead and say twelve Put number 2 on the first slot and twelve Remove the number 2 card from the first slot and stack it on top of card number 1, facing up. Continue the same manner until 19 When you get to 19 add one more bead unit, ask the child: How many loose beads do we have here? The child say: 10, Tell him: we can never have 10 loose beads, do you remember the rule when we have 10 units. We have to exchange the ten units to one ten bar Exchange Move the two ten bar beads to twenty slot. Start placing a unit to the 20 in beads to say 21 and build 21 on the board. Continue in this manner until about 39 or until the child feels comfortable Then allow him to continue on his own
