CXL Device Telemetry: A Software Interface Proposal

Presented by Steve Scargall (Memverge) CXL is a new interconnect technology that enables high-performance and low-latency communication between processors and devices such as memory, storage, and accelerators. CXL devices offer various features and capabilities that can be leveraged to improve application performance. However, accessing and analyzing CXL device telemetry data can be challenging due to the diversity and vendor-specific methods. In this presentation, we propose a software interface that simplifies and standardizes the access, collection, and analysis of CXL device telemetry data. We describe how the software interface can support different CXL device types and topologies to assist software, such as memory tiering, to make intelligent decisions or deliver quality-of-service based on real-time telemetry data. We provide examples and use cases of the software interface for different scenarios and applications. We conclude by discussing the future work and directions for the software interface development.
