Both are very competent little speakers, but they go about their business in different ways. Audioengine A2+ does not try to sound bigger than it is and focuses on clarity and natural tone, while iLoud Micro Monitor uses Digital Sound Processing to its advantage and squeezes every single drop of bass available from such a small enclosure to sound full and BIG. iLouds pursuit of bass is very successful but comes at a price of slight clarity loss in the mid ranges. Overall both are successful at what they try to accomplish. Audioengine feels more solidly built, looks more stylish than iLoud and has a simple USB DAC built in, but at the same time lacks few features like tone control and Bluetooth connectivity which iLoud has. In the end, if I was in the market for ultra compact speakers, I would go with iLoud because of its amazing bass and full sound, but I also perfectly understand why someone would choose A2+ instead.
