Vehicle Flees into Georgia from South Carolina | Suspects Get Introduced to the Georgia State Patrol

On 10/03/20 at approximately 0412 hours I, Trooper Zachary Walker (201), was traveling on GA-21 near Interstate 95. I heard dispatched over the radio that Jasper County South Carolina units were in pursuit of a Chevrolet SUV that fled from a traffic stop. Dispatch stated that they were crossing into mile marker 109 and observed several patrol cars in front of me with emergency equipment activated. I activated my blue lights and siren, and made my way to the front of the pursuit. As I reached mile marker 106 I could not see the violator vehicle. Officer Austin Neumann (61269) of the Savannah Police Department stated over the radio that the vehicle was approaching my rear with no headlights on at a high rate of speed. Officer Neumann later stated that as he was on routine patrol, he observed an SUV with no headlights fail to obey a red traffic signal on Jimmy DeLoach Parkway at Interstate 95, nearly causing a collision with his patrol car. I pulled onto the shoulder of the road and the vehicle passed me at an extremely high rate of speed. I checked the Chevrolet Traverse with no headlights at 112 mph in a 70 mph zone. I radioed into the radio room that I was the primary pursuit vehicle. The Traverse was traveling south in the left lane. Due to no other Troopers in the immediate area, I quickly ruled out the possibility of boxing in or the use of stop sticks. I knew of the on-going construction on Interstate 95 near mile marker 100, and I knew the pursuit needed to be terminated. As I positioned my patrol car for a PIT on the passenger side of the Traverse, it began failing to maintain lane by changing lanes to the far right lane. The Traverse pushed my patrol car to the west shoulder in an attempt to prevent a Precision Immobilization Technique. As we approached mile marker 104, I quickly matched speeds with the Traverse, placed my driver's side push bar on the rear passenger fender of the Traverse, and turned my wheel slightly causing the Traverse to rotate clockwise and leave the roadway. I observed in my rear view mirror that the Traverse rotated a full 360 degrees and began traveling south again. The Traverse passed me again at a high rate of speed. As we approached the 103 mile marker, I matched speeds again with the Traverse, placed my passenger side push bar against the driver's side rear fender of the Traverse, and turned my wheel slightly. The Traverse rotated counterclockwise and off the roadway into the median. While traveling southeast through the median, the passenger side rear struck the guard rail. The Traverse then continued to rotate, and came to an uncontrolled rest in the median facing southwest. I turned my patrol car around, and observed the driver exit the Traverse. He then jumped over the guard rail and fled eastbound across the northbound lanes of Interstate 95. I chased after him, through a ditch, up an embankment, and over a fence. Due to the circumstances of the situation, I unholstered my department issued Glock model 45, activated my flash light, and aimed it at the driver while giving loud verbal commands to show me his hands. The driver, later identified as Malik McCaully with a date of birth of /77, laid on the ground with his arms over his head. I holstered my pistol and Mr. McCaully was then taken into custody without further incident. The passenger was identified as Tamesha Brown with a date of birth of /80, and was taken into custody by Officer Neumann. While searching the vehicle, several fake identifications were found inside the passenger area. A large quantity of money, credit cards with different names, and several pieces of paper which are consistent with fraud were found in a black bag inside the vehicle. Pooler Police Department arrived on scene, and Officer Juan Gonzalez (647) took possession of the vehicle and all contents for evidence purposes. The Traverse was towed by Burnsed Towing to Pooler Police Department for processing. Also, while searching the vehicle, an odor of marijuana was detected. A half burnt marijuana cigarette was found in the front seating area of the Traverse. It was also discovered that the driver's seat belt was locked to the B-pillar indicating the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. Due to Mr. McCaully being in an accident at over 100 mph, Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus could not be performed. Mr. McCaully immediately began complaining of leg, back, and neck pain. Due to Mr. McCaully's complaint of injury, and the circumstances at hand, Walk and Turn and One Leg Stand could not be performed. I observed Mr. McCaully's eyes to be watery. I read implied consent notice for blood for suspects age 21 and over to which he stated he would take the State test of his blood. Mr. McCaully and Ms. Brown were transported to Memorial Hospital for clearance. Mr. McCaully and Ms. Brown were transported to Chatham County jail were they were processed in. Mr. McCaully was issued citations.
