BROADMOOR ESCAPE SIRENS (you can see the shutters clearly) {{Beware: LOUD VIDEO!}}

Here are two sirens from a 13 siren system, located in the neighbouring towns surrounding a secure hospital in the UK. Featured here are the Bracknell Station and Bagshot siren. MORE INFO: This was back in 2014 when the sirens existed - they are no more (more info below). The sirens were tested at 10am each Monday and I have separate videos for most of them sounding. Me and Chay went out to find them all. It was a very interesting bank holiday Monday! It was a good day as we did other things like play football in the parks, McDonalds and see the sirens of course! BY THE WAY - In the video, I have offset the two sirens by two minutes, but in reality all 13 sirens are tested together. This is for illustration purposes (see the times in the bottom left and right). THE SIREN HUNT: It was a mixed bag - some viewable from the street, some hidden so much that you'd never know they were there (unless it ativated!), some in council depots, compounds, parks and believe it or not - in the middle of housing estates metres from houses! (would scare the living daylights out of residents if they went off at 3am!). Some are in secure places with no access at all. HOW THE SIRENS WORK: The Klaxon CS8 siren. A 415volt 3 phase motor spins two rotors on either side. One rotor is for the high tone and the other for the low tone (the one with most holes is the HIGH tone). During the escape siren, the airflow is cut alternately to each rotor by a shutter on each end producing the distinctive high-low tones. I believe these are known as CODED SHUTTERS - hence the model name Klaxon "CS"8. Both shutters are opened together for the all clear tone. You can just make out the high and low frequencies being produced together if you listen. WHY ARE THERE ESCAPE SIRENS? They were installed in the 1950s/60s with the intention of warning residents in surrounding towns and villages to remain in their homes and keep their children supervised following the escape of a Broadmoor patient. In those days security at the facility was nothing like it is now and some would say they are no longer needed. But they do a job - "to warn". Escapes can never be "impossible", but "more and more unlikely" as security and procedures improve at the hospital. 2018 - WHAT NOW? The siren system was originally installed in the 1950s. The copper telephone wire system is outdated and parts have not been available for many years now. With various faults developing and lack of parts and knowledge to fix it, a decision had to be made to 1) Update the whole system (13 locations, the infrastructure, the actual sirens, everything!) , 2) Remove 50% of the sirens, update the ones that are closest to the hospital , 3) Maintain the sirens to the best of everyone's ability, then scrap the system once the new 'more secure' hospital has been completed. They decided on OPTION 3, Bearing in mind, in the 1950s we didn't have telephones or mobile phones and the secure hospital didn't have anything near the security it has now AND there is a new 'more secure' hospital nearing completion, it was decided to decommission the whole system rather than spend a lot of money to update it. By the end of 2018, all sirens will be removed. A new siren will be installed on the new hospital, which doesn't sound that interesting (electronic, not motorised). In fact, during testing it doesn't make any noise?! ............. THE MRMATTANDMRCHAY CHANNEL, established 2009: I'm passionate about uploading quality and interesting videos for YOU, my audience. What is my channel about? "Old lift machinery made interesting", old air-raid sirens, prehistoric alarm equipment - things that I find fascinating and I hope you will too. If "I" don't find it interesting - IT DOESN'T GET UPLOADED! I always spend a lot of time editing my videos with animations, video in-sync with music and voice overs to make them this way. I'm also a perfectionist! My moto - "Quality NOT Quantity" - spending a month editing a video is not a rarity! But without you, I'm nothing here. Thank you so much for watching. ...mrmattandmrchay is me (Matt) and my son Chay.
