hotelforum 2019: The winner - Schgaguler Hotel

The winner of the “Hotel Property Award 2019”: Schgaguler Hotel Location: Castelrotto/Kastelruth, Italy Owned by: Schgaguler family Operated by: Schgaguler family Project developer: Schgaguler family, Peter Pichler Architecture Architect: Peter Pichler Interior design: Peter Pichler Architecture & Martin Schgaguler Type of operation/category: holiday hotel, full-service, 4 superior Construction period (conversion): 4 months No. of rooms: 42 Andreas Martin, Managing Director hotelforum: The locals in particular describe them as the most beautiful mountains in the world. After all, the Dolomites were formed several thousand years ago as fossilised coral reefs. Today they are grouped together majestically as 3000m-high peaks around the Seiser Alm. Some 1,000 metres below this alpine pasture, you can still find the crumbling remains of an old castle, Castellum Ruptum in Latin, which also lent its name to the village of Castelrotto/Kastelruth. Some 35 years ago, a plot of land was acquired here in the centre of the village, and then an apartment house was opened some time later. Each unit has a small kitchen. After that an underground car park was added, and a fitness centre was built complete with a swimming pool. Today the former wellness residence has finally become a fully-fledged hotel. And the parents have handed over the keys to the next generation of children. Welcome to the Schgaguler Hotel. Tobias Schgaguler: The change-over of generations in our business was well timed, as we were able to contribute our ideas in terms of the conversion. This has meant that the new generation has been able virtually to set up its own hotel. Then we launched an architectural competition, ultimately opting for Pichler, Peter. The new product is quite distinct from other hotel buildings here in the region, above all through its architecture. It’s very minimalistic and purist, with only a few colours. All the materials that we brought to the hotel were local. This means that all the chairs and all the lighting come directly from the producers, or the blankets come from Spain and are hand-woven. And we tried to do something modern, but still maintain an alpine character. Martin, the oldest, is the creative head of our family. It is his photographs, mountain photographs of the Dolomites, that are hanging everywhere, and particularly in the corridors. Sandra, who is a wine sommelier, takes care of the gastronomy, and Peter and I take care of the hotel. Our father now particularly takes care of the hikes. We offer guided hikes in summer and guided skiing tours in winter. And our mother is a hostess with her body and soul. She actually still works at the hotel reception every day, and she knows every guest. People appreciate this too. The products here in the hotel, I mean the wines, but also the food, these days we try to cook purely regional dishes and offer local drinks and wine. South Tyrol is a well-known wine region. We have excellent red and white wines. We have tried to build a bridge to our region. We wanted to create a place that would allow people to leave behind the sensory overload of everyday life in the form of colours or different materials, and so on. Exactly. This is meant to make it a place of inspiration.
