[作画 MAD/AMV] Yoshinori Kanada (金田伊功)

Super Animator: Yoshinori Kanada (金田伊功) Kanada is the most important and influential animator in the history of Japan, completely revolutionizing animation and showing its great potential. During his youth he was impressed by Hayao Miyazaki's animation for the 1969 film Flying Phantom Ship, deciding he would become an animator. He took a correspondence animation course from Tokyo Designer Gakuin and later studied at Tokyo Cool Japan, being hired by Toei Douga and debuting as an animator in Mahou no Mako-chan #13. As time went by, he began to stand out very much in mecha series such as Getter Robo, Getter Robo G, Gaiking, Zambot 3 or Daitarn 3. In Cutie Honey and Getter Robo an approximation of what would become the Kanada Style was shown, while Getter Robo G consolidated it. In 1979, two great Kanada sequences were shown that were incredibly popular, being the legendary animation of the opening of Cyborg 009 and some sequences of Galaxy Espress 999, which was not only incredible, but also managed to impact many viewers who decided to become animators thanks to that. Kanada developed a style of effects animation with a unique movement, implementing the pose-to-pose movement that had previously been popularized by Yoshiyuki Momose and Yasuo Ootsuka, but this time the poses were very strong, also working with irregular timing in favor of expressiveness despite time and budget limitations (again something inspired by Ootsuka, although changing the focus completely). He also implemented exaggerated perspectives, constant deformations, block shading/lighting in different very marked layers with impossible silhouettes, in addition to the use of speed lines placed perpendicular to the movement of the character's parts to generate a sensation of perspective and depth, without forgetting that he was also responsible for the impact frames as we know them today. With all this he managed to completely change the course of Japanese animation, directly or indirectly affecting much of what has been developed as a means of artistic expression until today. In short, Kanada created an entire anime aesthetic. Among the revolutionary effects of Kanada, fire stands out very much, as it had a strongly liquid sensation and internal energy. He also created the Kanada Dragon and the incredibly popular Kanada Light Flare, as well as inspiring manga artists with the Kanada Perspective. Kanada regularly deviated from the model sheets, sometimes ignoring the storyboard entirely, breaking the strict rules of animation directors and supervisors of maintaining a dominant style without letting the animators stand out with an individual style. Kanada's influence on Japanese animation was so great that his style managed to dominate the industry for just over a decade, causing many animators to adopt his style and giving rise to what is known as the "Kanada School" or "Kanada Style". In the late 80s, Takashi Nakamura's school of realistic animation took over the Kanada style, but despite that he continued to inspire many young and veteran animators to follow his animation fundamentals and in the late 90s the Kanada style was taken over by young Gainax animators, who led by Hiroyuki Imaishi, Sushio and You Yoshinari, establishing the Neo Kanada style and a new generation of viewers were able to approach the style. He is also recognized for achieving particularly good realistic animation, keeping in mind the volume and weight in his sequences, working with Ghibli and Miyazaki on different productions such as Nausicaa, Laputa (credited as Main Animator), Totoro, Kiki, Porco Rosso and Mononoke Hime. This time period shows a transition of all of Kanada's work towards what would define his 90s style. It should also be noted that Kanada obviously received a lot of rejection in Miyazaki's layout of him. After Porco Rosso he left Ghibli and worked as an independent animator of different feature films and OVAs, later joining Square and moving to Hawaii, moving away from the animation industry and seeking to develop new forms of expression in CG. Kanada passed away 14 years ago, on July 21, 2009, but the Kanada style will never die thanks to young and veteran animators who are amazed by his style, deciding to adopt it in different forms and combinations, making it possible for it to transcend time and remain. probably for much longer.
