I am planning to write 24 preludes in total, in all the 12 major and minor keys. The next prelude will be in the next key on the circle of fiifths, G major. Composing this prelude is a fresh challenge for me. Even though I have written a lot of fast-paced music, all my pieces were still based on a rather clear and singable theme. Even the non-melodic bits were usually just transitions between clearly-themed sections. This prelude, however, isn't based on a clear, singable melody at all. Rather, the whole piece aims to convey a sense of "urgency" and "storminess". As a result, it is dominated by rapid and fiery fingerwork, and hence the apt title "toccata". Another unique point of this piece is that it doesn't have blatant Lisztian influences like many of my other compositions. Rather, I just compose what I feel is appropriate, with loose inspirations from Chopin's Op. 10 No.4 and the 4th movement of Alkan's Symphony for solo piano. Hope you like this piece.
