For 1972, Porsche approached Penske racing, and their ace driver Mark Donahue, to improve on the design of the 917/10 in every way. Since leaving the World Sportscar Championship at the end of 1971, Porsche was able to focus almost all of their money and attention on their Can Am competitor. Much larger bodywork, a revised gearbox, shorter wheelbase, and new fuel injection with a larger intake manifold to help reduce turbo lag turned the 917/10 into a monster. Donahue described it as "the meanest, wildest, ugliest race car" he had ever driven, and as if to prove his point, crashed the car at Road Atlanta when the rear wing detached at over 180 mph. His knee injury left teammate George Follmer as lead driver, who proceeded to win 5 races and the championship.
