Similarities Between Persian and Punjabi

How similar are Persian and Punjabi and to what extent can Persian and Punjabi speakers understand one another? While Persian is classified as a Western Iranian language, Punjabi is Indo-Aryan. Both languages are within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European languages. Punjabi people are native to the Punjab region in South Asia, divided between India and Pakistan, while Persian people are primarily native to present-day Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, as well some parts of the Caucasus. The relation between Persians and Punjabis is historical, having been neighbours for a very long period of time. In fact, the name Punjab itself is derived from the two Persian words, panj (five) and ab (water), meaning the land of five waters.
