Water is life and the beginning of life. Now that the heavy flooding of the last few days here in southern Germany is slowly subsiding and the water levels of the rivers and streams are returning to normal, the first changes in the landscape are becoming apparent. New streams and ponds have emerged where there was once dry land or shoreline zones. New water areas and small streams have emerged where there were previously swamps and sandy areas. Nature in this habitat is renewing itself and new life and habitats have emerged. The protected area here in the Langenbachtal is in constant change over the course of the seasons, creating unique habitats for plants, fish, insects and amphibians. Despite all the positive effects, in recent years there have also been negative effects in these areas after such floods. Due to commercial agriculture, which is coming ever closer to these areas with its open soil without intercropping, more and more arable soil is being carried into the streams, which is leading to silting up of the basic structures of many streams. Vital gravel layers are being compacted by the sand that is washed in, thereby destroying the place where some fish species lay their eggs. The massive introduction of fertilizers and nutrients is also having a visible impact on these habitats. For example, the river mussel, which years ago could still be found in large populations in the streams, has been severely decimated by this and the increased water temperatures. They are simply dying off. This is a development that we must monitor closely and be able to counteract in good time. Otherwise we will lose more of these wonderful, rich habitats forever.
