They also required constant adjustment of the packing nut to reduce the amount of water dripping into the bilge. The PK and RPG Series of Rudder Ports from RE Thomas Marine Hardware reduce these issues by building a more robust housing and keeping the packing material lower in the rudder port body (as opposed to in the packing nut on other designs). In this design, packing gland is pulled into the body of the rudder port to compress packing material around the rudder post or rudder shaft. This creates a more solid structure to support the forces of the rudder while not depending on a few rows of fine threat to keep the packing nut tight around the packing material.
