"Guntai Kouta" (Army Ballad) is a famous informal composition sung popularly by Japanese soldiers during WW2 which remains a very interesting item. The lyrics indeed indicate its informal nature and that it wasn't supposed to be taken that seriously. There are no contemporary recordings of the song and the original author is unknown. It is originally a sort of spoof of another contemporary song, "Hontou ni Gokurou ne"(   • 軍歌：　♪ほんとにほんとにご苦労ね　歌：beni9jyaku（紅孔雀）  ) Translation by me. The lyrics can be a bit confusing again, but one part essentially is a back and forth between the singer and the girl he's left back home. The ballad was sung in different forms, depending on whether one was in the air force, navy or regular infantry, so the lyric of "cannot bring a woman aboard a transport ship/fighter plane/etc" was changed accordingly. This song was remade with humorous lyrics by the 1970s band, the Drifters (   • ほんとにほんとにご苦労さん［ザ・ドリフターズ］  ) with the opening lyric "isn't life as x horrible?" repeated for a number of different jobs. Translation notes: "seven-buttoned uniform"/ "nanatsu botan" - the Japanese navy uniform (nowadays: the high school student uniform) "special attack squadron" - the formal name of the Kamikaze "crying mole" - spot/mole just below the eyes that East Asian culture views as a sign of anguish or proneness to anguish As usual, I stress that no political expression is meant, and that this is a historical document that I have tried to recreate.
