Model Rockets: We're trying out many rockets in calm and gusty winds including the rebuilt Majestic

Gary and I were joined by our new friends, Daryl and Donald. They've been launching locally for many years. The morning started out with winds around 5mph. By 10am, they were gusting to 20mph but that's okay, I had flown the Majestic and Cherokee-E by then. The eyelet pulled out of the Majestic payload. I made a bulkhead out of balsa and used lots of CA and glue but wasn't enough. I shoulda used epoxy (or bought a plywood bulkhead, nah). This is the rebuilt Majestic after it landed in a HECO substation and they ran it over with their truck and broke the custom made fins off. I didn't bother with an exquisite paint job so just painted it blue and added lots of stickers. The Ion altimeter graph was decent considering the rapid descent of the NC. The abrupt landing caused some damage to the shoulder. Without the payload bay, the sustainer had a slow gradual descent. Fortunately, it just made it into the park. Daryl was able to pull it out of the tree using an old broom. The Space Shuttle was also majestic. The glider seemed to fall like a pancake. Fortunately, no damage to the glider or fins. I asked Gary if it was worth the $80. I guess the jury is still out. I believe the Asteroid Hunter had an overly energetic ejection which caused the 100# Kevlar to snap and partially pull out the motor retainer. The busted forward BT is easy to fix. In fact, I'm gonna try a longer tube. Replacing the motor tube without cutting it open will be a challenge. Gary was having issues with his controller, and D&D eventually gave up on theirs and started using "alternative methods" that I didn't document. I mean it works. That's how I used to launch back in the day. I Had the best flight of the @GlenP Mini Viper. Always a crowd pleaser. For Donald's Boosted Chiller, I was expecting it to go 1000ft from past experience. It didn't go nearly that high and ended up lawndarting. It was nearly epic. 0:00 Majestic F15-4 7pts 2:10 Flight video 858ft 3:57 Cherokee-E D12-5 6pts 5:09 Flight video 599ft 6:35 DD Mongoose 7:01 Gary Blenders, A10-3T 7:21 Hawaiian Stilt bird 7:40 Mars Mars Longship D12-5 6pts 8:29 Flight video 322ft 9:33 DD 10:03 Gary Space Shuttle, C5-3 10:46 DD 11:15 Xarconian Cruiser C5-3 6pts 12:08 Flight video 13:04 Gary Applewhite Cone Rocket, F15-4 13:48 DD Mini Comanche-2 14:20 Glen Mini Viper A10-3T 3pts 15:20 DD Chiller A8-3 15:46 Asteroid Hunter C5-3 4pts 16:25 Flight video 17:34 DD Wacky Wiggler B6-4 17:46 DD Boosted Chiller D12-0/A8-3 17:58 Total 32pts + 10 bonus = 42pts
