Creating compost from scratch for our homestead we are starting from scratch

Compost is the be-all and end-all of growing your own fruit and vegetables on the homestead. Without a steady supply of nutritious, home made compost, growing your own food on a homestead just wouldn't be possible. See how I get this right using the autumn/fall season's fallen leaves. Watch this video on how to make compost using dry leaves -    • How to make DRY LEAF COMPOST - using ...   You can support our Homestead journey & our work by buying us a coffee - https://www.buymeacoffee.com/tamakoah... The landscape takes on massive change as the leaves on trees start to change colour, fall to the floor and it starts to get colder and darker. This is the perfect time for gardeners and homesteaders to wonder the streets of their local communities, or their own properties, to pick up as many fallen leaves to make compost. Most of the time, or in fact, almost all of the time, people in suburbs or communities rake up fallen leaves and put them into plastic bags for the municipal services to take them away. This create unnecessary pressure on the waste system. Taking as many bags of fallen leaves as you can to create your own leaf mold compost is not only giving you incredibly good quality compost, it is also removing all this organic matter from dumps, which may reduce the amount of harmful gasses that are being produced. Great tips for creating great compost on your homestead - Collect the fallen leaves from as wide a variety of trees as possible. This improves the nutrient and structural makeup of the final compost - Stick to the 2-to-1 ratio of carbon to nitrogen when making your compost pile. Carbon-rich materials, like fallen leaves, need nitrogen to feed the soil organisms that break down the organic matter. If you don't have enough nitrogen your compost pile will take longer to break down, but it will still break down over time - Ensure there is enough ventilation and aeration for your compost pile. For this reason I am using chicken wire as it provides ample airflow - Regularly turn your compost pile to properly aerate the centre of the pile and evenly distribute all the microbial and soil actively throughout the compost pile - Ensure there is enough moisture and water your compost pile regularly Please follow our journey on Facebook:   / tamakoa.homestead   #homestead #homesteading #kleinkaroohomestead
