Onam is a cultural and harvest festival that is celebrated in the Kerala which is in Southern part of India with great enthusiasm. Onam Sadhya or the special Onam meal served on a plantain leaf is a special attraction. The Onam Sadhya consists of more than 24 delicious dishes that are all purely vegetarian. The usual items in an Onam Sadhya include: Sambar, Rasam, Vegetables, Moong Dal, Kaaya varuthatha (banana chips), sarkara upperi (Jaggery coated banana chips), mango pickle, lime pickle, kichadi (Gourd in mildly spiced yoghurt), pachadi (Pineapple in yoghurt) , olan ( ash gourd with black chana) etc. The Avial, Khichadi, Kaalan,Olan, Pachadi, Thoran, Payasam are some of the dishes that deserve a special mention. The dishes make a good use of coconut, curds, Mustard seeds, curry leaves, whole red chillies and are usually cooked in coconut oil. We were fortunate to be invited to have Onam Sadhya by Nainu's Coastal Kitchen which is a popular Kerala restaurant at CBD Belapur in Navi Mumbai. The food was served with so much love and warmth that it left us overwhelmed. There was a cultural programme too which was enacted with Kathakali which is the popular dance form of Kerala.
