Leonardo DiCaprio hasn't yet made (and probably won't make) his movie about Billy Milligan -- "The Crowded Room" -- but these excerpts are taken from a 2-hour documentary entitled "Billy." It was produced in 1985 when Billy Milligan was having legal problems in Athens, Ohio. NOTE: Within the psychological profession, MPD is now called Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) The excerpts include interview footage with Daniel Keyes (author of The Minds of Billy Milligan), (deceased, 2014, age 86) http://www.danielkeyesauthor.com/ Dorothy Moore, Billy's mother (deceased, 2012, age 83) Dr. David Caul, Billy's doctor (deceased, 1988, age 66) Billy Milligan, age 30. (deceased, 2014, age 59) Billy died from soft-tissue cancer in a hospital in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday, December 12, 2014. --- NOTE: Unfortunately, the full 2-hour documentary is not presently available for viewing. If circumstances change, I will probably post the first hour of the documentary and will place a notice here. The 2nd hour is about local conflicts and legal issues which are fascinating, but no longer relevant. BACKGROUND -- William Stanley Milligan (Feb 14, 1955 - Dec 12, 2014) In the late 1970s, "Billy" Milligan was arrested for committing a series of 3 rapes/robberies in Columbus, Ohio (the victims were abducted from the Ohio State campus and driven in their cars to Delaware county where they were raped and robbed.) While in custody, it was determined that he was suffering from multiple personality disorder (MPD) and that the crimes were committed by 2 of his "alter" personalities.The abductions and robberies were committed by Reagan, the rapes were committed by Adalana, a lesbian personality. As a result, he was found "not-guilty by reason of insanity." This was the first time someone in American had been acquitted of major crimes because they suffered from multiple personality disorder. NOTE: Multiple Personality -- now, called Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) -- is often caused by severe child abuse. The individual mind "splits" and sections off memories to cope with the physical and emotional pain. As a result, sometimes several personalities are created. In some cases, one personality will have no knowledge that the other personalities exist. All they know is that they "lose time" when they have blackout spells and "wake up" days, months, or years later when they are allowed to "take the spot.". The personality who is conscious/aware and in charge of the body is said to be "on the spot" -- a metaphor for standing in the spotlight of consciousness while the other personalities are off in the shadows (perhaps vaguely aware of what's going on) or sleeping. Billy Milligan's personalities included a number of "undesirables" who had been "banned" from the Spot by stronger personalities. Several of his personalities were artists, some were children, some were con artists and escape artists. Some spoke with foreign accents. Most were left-handed. With DID, some personalities may know about some of the others and even share their memories. More information about this psychological disorder can be found at the website for the professional organization dealing with Dissociation and Identity Disorders: The International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation - http://ISST-D.org In Billy Milligan's case, he alleged that when he was a child, he was sexually abused and buried alive by his step-father, Chalmer Milligan (Dorothy's husband before she married Del Moore.) After the trial, with a great deal of media attention, Milligan was assigned to an Ohio state mental hospital (the Athens Asylum) where he could be treated by psychiatrist Dr. David Caul, an expert in the field of MPD. While he was being treated, Athens resident and professor at Ohio University, Daniel Keyes (author of "Flowers for Algernon" which had been made into a motion picture called "Charly," starring Cliff Robertson), worked with Milligan to write what became a best-selling book entitled "The Minds of Billy Milligan." They subsequently collaborated on another book entitled "The Milligan Wars" which was published in Japan. After being treated by Dr. Caul, Milligan was deemed well enough to move out into the Athens community (which was in-keeping with Ohio's requirements that, as patients improve, they must be transferred to the least restrictive environment that is proper for their condition.) Milligan rented a farm house just outside of Athens but still had to check in with the hospital each day. However, his living out in the community caused a great deal of friction and fear. This documentary was made in 1985 when the Athens community was wrestling with the idea of having a rapist and armed-robber living in their midst. Eventually, (early 1990s) Milligan left Ohio and moved to Los Angeles where James Cameron planned to make a movie about him. That never happened.
