After the last investigation, I decided to follow my own advice and RMA my unit as well. I was curious how Valve has resolved this issue. It appears they have made a revision to the audio board which they have their 3rd party repair centres supplied with and ready to fix. I recommend going through with this RMA since (at least in North America) they are offering this for free. It only costs you time.
