BIH Lecture: Steven A Goldman

Lecture 28: “Progenitor Cell Replacement for the Treatment of Glial Disease” Glial cells, including oligodendrocytes and astrocytes, provide the physical and chemical support to neuronal cells and maintain their environment. Glial cells are derived from a common progenitor, the glial cell progenitor. Neurodegenerative diseases are very often based on degeneration or malfunctions of glial cells. In the BIH Lecture on December 9, 2022, Steven A. Goldman (University of Rochester Medical Center, USA, and University of Copenhagen, DK) presented novel findings in cell genesis and regeneration in the adult brain, with a focus on the use of stem and progenitor cells in both modeling and treating demyelinating and neurodegenerative diseases, including targets as diverse as progressive multiple sclerosis and the leukodystrophies. Goldman discussed recent advances in the understanding of the biology of glial cells that allow now the beginning of clinical trials for the treatment of glial disease, like Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Syndrom (PMS) and multiple scleroses (MS). Moreover, results from his laboratory also indicated a competition between young cells and old cells in the white matter of the brain. Young cells appear to induced apoptosis in older cells. A concept which might be extended to other tissues in mammalian organisms as well. The lecture was held in hybrid format and on-site at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Moderator: Hans Schöler (President of the GSCN and MPI for Molecular Biomedicine, Münster). Further information on this BIH Lecture: https://www.bihealth.org/en/notices/b...
