Time for Tea with Caitlin, an Ophthalmology and Vision Science STP

Hi everyone! Happy womxn in science day!! Last week I spoke with Caitlin, she’s on her 1st year of the Ophthalmology and Vision Science programme based in Newcastle. Thankfully for me they don’t do any actual eye surgery, they’re more involved in looking to see whether there are functional changes/deficits that are causing vision problems. Ophthalmology falls into the neurosensory specialisms, so in first year she’s also doing rotations in neurophysiology, audiology and clinical assessment. She didn’t have any specific experience in the specialism before the STP, but had lots of customer facing roles that she could use to demonstrate that she had the skills needed for the course :) It’s quite a small specialism but there are trainee networks and consortiums that have helped her connect with other trainees from different specialisms and within her own!
