Dr Ozello's Sports Medicine Report: Burner / Stinger AKA Brachial Plexus Neuropraxia (BPN) Burners and Stingers are injuries to cervical nerve roots that result in transient loss in sensory and/or motor function that leads to stinging, burning or radicular pain to affected extremity. Acute intense symptoms are usually temporary and most likely last a few seconds or minutes. Three main Mechanisms of Injury: 1) Hyperextension of cervical spine resulting in nerve root compression in neural foramina. 2) Stretch or traction of brachial plexus from bending of neck to opposite side, usually as a result of tackling or landing on side of helmet. 3) Direct blow to brachial plexus. Cervical spinal nerve roots are numbered corresponding to vertebral body below the nerve.
