Shikigami no Shiro 式神の城 - IR Mode - Kuga - 2.020.919.870pts

It's been a hot minute since I've enjoyed some (official) Shikigami action, and I ought to fix that! The old PC port (named Shikigami no Shiro EX) has an exclusive mode called IR (standing for "Internet Ranking" I assume) which remixes the stage portions (with the exception of 2-3) but keeps bosses the same (except 5-1 crystals are now invincible and can't be milked :    • Shikigami no Shiro 式神の城 - IR mode - 5...   ) If you've played EVO mode, the new stage layouts should be quite familiar since that mode reuses the IR variations and remixes the bosses on top of that. The sole exception of 2-3 stage being the same as in Arcade is actually hilarious because it's actually kinda bad in EVO mode lmao. The new stage segments are usually noticeably longer, and with the 5-1 milk being rendered null, the scoring routes focus more on milking the other bosses while keeping an eye on the timer to not run out. The stage portions being longer also make time a more pressing constraint, as I was getting close to the oni spawns even in my survival-oriented run. I've barely played EVO so this mode has a mix of familiarity and discovery. I can try and vaguely remember my boss strats while stages are new. I initially tried with Sayo and Kim and they seemed pretty fun to play, but the effort required to properly learn the stages and make progress was a bit much for the "quick clear while still scoring a bit" mindset I had with this mode. So Kuga it is, even if his low DPS makes it tough with the timer. I also realized this version has noticeable input lag which made me wonder how the hell I got my Sayo clears and scoring on it haha. However, I ended up getting used to it and in this run it was basically a non-issue for me after an acclimation process I didn't even feel was happening. And since it's mostly the comparison with the Steam port that threw me off, I can easily imagine my past self not even thinking anything was wrong when learning the game with Sayo and having never played the Steam port back then. Remember, it's the same guy who took forever to realize Psyvariar 2 on emulation has some input lag too lol. Most of my issues in actual runs were early stage restart hell, but when I went beyond stage 2, it usually was alright. The upside of longer stage portions is that you get more scoring opportunities and thus more extends overall. Kuga still struggles with the late-game as his shikigami isn't strong nor fast, but you have more than enough resources to go through the stages if you are an experienced Shikgami arcade player. I'm not fully sure how well-designed the new stages are for all the characters, but at least for Kuga it's not too bad as the main issue is how long it can take to kill waves. After two or three sessions, I managed to get this run rolling. For some reason, the sound effects and voice clips died halfway through 3-3, but magically resumed in 5-1 just so I could hear Shoujo's soothing voice haha. I think I had these sound problems when recording some of the hi-score competition IR mode replays too, so it's not entirely new to me. However, I did not remember what Kuga's dialogue against Shoujo was, so boy did he crack me up lmao. So fucking excessive in his disgust and contempt hahahaha. Maybe laughing too much is why I lost a life on the spider web lol. Another death on 5-2 while (wrongly) betting on the green laser tails not having hitboxes was putting me very close to a game over. The situation looked good before the boss fight but it quickly became very tense. The timer getting into beeping territory did not help matters! On the other hand, I knew the final boss and especially 5-3 was a good place to get back at least one extend so I was aware there always was a chance. And I did indeed get that extend in 5-3. That encounter went without too many issues, though I had to bomb once on the opener RNG, and was surprised at how fast the final pattern was (I vaguely remember it being slower on Steam, maybe a character-based difference though?). By that point, I had enough resources to go through it and nab that 1CC. Beating the 2bil threshold is a nice bonus too, even though I know there's a lot more scoring potential here if one desires to explore it.
