OVEREXCITABILITIES: WINDOWS INTO THE INNER WORLD OF THE GIFTED The concept of Overexcitability (OE) is frequently misunderstood. OE is a greater neural capacity to respond to stimuli. It is the zing you experience when you are with certain people who seem to radiate excitement. Yet, some question the existence, usefulness and measurement of this construct. A substantial body of research provides empirical support for OEs, and the construct is supported by extensive research on Openness to Experience in the Big Five Personality Theory. The OEs cannot be replaced by Openness to Experience because they are the seeds of higher level emotional and moral development in Dabrowski’s theory. They are of practical importance as windows into the interior of giftedness.
