From filmmaker Alex Garland, Civil War is a film that imagines a fractured United States going to war in the not-so-distant future. Speaking about the movie's plot with CBR's Kevin Polowy, the film was warned to be a cautionary tale by cast members Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, and Wagner Moura. "While we were making this film, during rehearsal, the Ukrainian-Russian war started, so it's not like this isn't happening all over the world," Dunst explained. "It's just, I think, shocking for people to see that democracy is gone in this film, and how terrifying that is, and people should really take this film as a warning, and appreciate what they have, and start treating people like human beings." When asked if Civil War should be seen as a cautionary tale, Spaeny added, "Yeah, I mean, I think it's right there on the page. [That was] one of my first feelings, after being excited to collaborate with Alex Garland again — that was my first draw to taking this project. It's definitely scary, and something that hits close to home. But I think that's one of the beautiful things about film. It's got a lot of great things, but you can work through your fears through film, and I think that's what you're seeing us do, and seeing Alex do." "Any great artwork should feel timely, should feel something that you connect [with]," Moura noted. "I wonder, what are people going to think about Civil War in 15 years? Or, how would this film have been received 10 years ago? But somehow, when you get to do something that makes sense, or gives reactions like the one you have in the moment that we're living, that's where strong pieces of art make sense." Alex Garland, who will next revisit 28 Days Later as the writer of the upcoming 28 Years Later movies, wrote and directed Civil War. Along with Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, and Wagner Moura, the film stars Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune: Part Two), Sonoya Mizuno (House of the Dragon), and Nick Offerman (The Last of Us). The official logline for the Civil War film reads, "In a dystopian future America, a team of military-embedded journalists races against time to reach Washington, D.C., before rebel factions descend upon the White House."
